All the research tells us that the quality of the relationships and bonds in your life is a key determinant in your overall wellbeing and happiness. So it’s very wise to invest some time and energy on improving them.
Relationships are complex because we are complex. What we want and expect from our relationships, romantic and otherwise has changed so much in the last fifty years. Everyone wants to be seen for who they are, valued and respected for that, free to achieve all their goals, have a family and a love that can last.
It can be a challenge to find and indeed to maintain as we, and those around us change through all the phases of life.
It can be difficult to see where we are going wrong ourselves – like looking in a mirror, we often only see what we expect to see. It’s also natural to blame those around us, but the best changes begin with ourselves.
Sometimes a fresh perspective can shift us to a new beginning.
Here are some examples of the kinds of issues that frequently arise in my clinical rooms.
If you are Single- you may need help with
- The choices you make at the outset of dating who you are drawn to and why?
- Are you trying to please instead of trying to select?
- Are you burnt out from the eternal rejections and online deceptions?
- Are you investing your energy where you shouldn’t?
- When is it time to end this relationship?
If you are in a Couple- you or both may struggle with
- Arguments that seem relentless and repair that is more difficult.
- Resentment or anger that is not understood.
- Finding time for ‘us’ and how to manage- the challenges of the arrival of children.
- Infidelity, trust and repair.
Family members ask
- My daughter wants nothing to do with me and I’m heartbroken – what can I do?
- My son’s new wife won’t let us visit and see our grandchildren, what can I do?
- Sibling issues – often around managing illness within the family.
As a psychotherapist, I am trained to hear what you cannot, to articulate what is happening in the space deep within yourself and between you and others. Here you will find new ways to think about the issue and alternative paths you can take to effect change.
